Not a riveting read but then such a trip isn't riveting, there are the fun days, the wow occasions & then there are days when nothing seems to go right, you might then ask okay so why the 4 stars, that was because the book is still an interesting & worthwhile read. You take the journey through the author's narration & how he experienced it, where he documents the daily experiences of his family on their overland trip & their daily trials & tribulations. If you are remotely interested in overlanding, exploring or travelling to new places then you can kind of get the experience & the idea of these places via the book. The author tells the story of their trip pretty well so that you get to understand how their typical day is & the highs & lows they experience, the good as well as the bad so that the reader understands that such a trip is not just a bed of roses & that their lives aren't just a big holiday, there are the daily mundane maintenance things that still need to be dealt with. He has no regrets though, as a family they seem to be enjoying themselves & are planning their next trip & next book. If you were/are planning such a trip for the first time then this book will either spur you on or sober you up, an adventure it is, but plain sailing no, Graeme seems to have told it as it is.
I have read a few books now about overloading through South America but this one was so far my favorite. The first quarter or so of the book is the family's journey overloading through Africa (they are originally from South Africa) and then the rest of their book is their journey through South America told through a South African's perspective which I found very refreshing seeing as a lot of the books I have read have been through the perspective of someone from the United States. If you are thinking of doing a trip like this or just want a very entertaining read about a family's several year-long journey through an incredible country, I would recommend this book
Exceptional story telling and amazing adventures...a must read for any current or aspiring overlander! I love the unabashed accounts of successes and failures. It is a great balance of story telling and overlanding technical detail. Too many travel and overlanding books say "we broke down, but now we have it fixed and this is our next destination...blah blah blah. Graeme shares enough detail to put you in his shoes and really transports you feel like you are on the trip with them. You will also learn a lot about what it is like to overland and how it is not for the faint of heart! Great job guys!
Whether you're a seasoned overlander or an armchair global dreamer, this book is a fun read from start to finish. Graeme does a brilliant job entertwining hilarious accounts of working through the nuances of each country they visit, fiddling with the Land Rover, driving harrowing roads and dispelling some of the ridiculous preconceived "horrors" they were constantly warned about before setting off. A very easy read that'll have you shopping for a Landy of your own.
Graeme offers a true and honest story of what it is to travel with a family. All the highs and devastating lows . The fears of a father and husband , questioning his decisions but keeping the course. More than that it is an honest study of a family . He and Luisa's love for each other and their children . Buy the book , tell a friend or ten to buy it and keep them rolling .
As a long time adventurer myself, and someone who loves getting lost in their vehicle, this book was preaching to the converted. But it's books - and true-life adventures - like this that made me a convert! Splendid reading!
Just finished the book over a week of camping & traveling. Loved reading the saga of the Bell family and their adventures touring the world. Great vacation read, captures a voice like reading a travel journal. It was a perfect companion. Now I just need to get myself a Land Rover...
Books come along from time to time to change your world. Loved the book and got me out on the road, while not a 5 year deal:) I love the freedom of simply going and not having a specific destination!
