The feelings are reinforced throughout by the authors' prodigious research and the accumulation of details through the photographs. Some of the pictures included have never been published before, and their lengthy captions descibe not only who is in the photos, but also the circumstances under which they were taken. Framed pages expand on the political and economical situations of the time. The well-written main narrative, which uses aptly chosen quotations from the diary, takes readers from Anne's normal, happy childhood through the years in the Secret Annex to the betrayal and Anne's death from typhus in Bergen-Belsen just months before her 16th birthday and only weeks before the liberation of the camp. For readers the loss is double. One feels the personal loss of a bright, fun-loving, and talented individual who might have made a difference in the world and also remembers that many Anne Franks died during that nightmarish period.

Dr. David Lester’s book Serial Killers: The Insatiable Passion is a collection of academic studies and theories regarding serial killers. At the beginning of the book, Lester described that serial killers are often thought of as a contemporary American phenomenon. However, throughout the book, he demonstrates that these are largely myths and that serial killers have occurred throughout history and other countries. He detailed several serial killer case studies that dispel the myths and show that it is not a unique phenomenon. After dispelling the myths surrounding serial killers, he moves to the academic research, or lack thereof, and offers a critical viewpoint. He starts out by examining the definition of a serial killer, and as you reach the end of the chapter, it is very clear that there is a lack of agreement among scholars about the definition. He then moves onto the various theories and characteristics of serial killers while injecting his critiques of each study throughout the chapters. He contends that much of the research on serial killings does not differ greatly from that of single victim murders. Again, this is likely because of the conflicting definitions of a serial killing, but also because several studies failed to seperate mass murders and serial killers. In the end, he concludes saying the he is surprised by the lack of good scientific research on the topic of serial killers. The one problem with the book is that while Lester offers critique of the studies on serial killers, there is no study that is conducted that overcomes the previous failings of other studies. Lester offers logical and compelling critiques so much so that when you turn the page, you are hoping for him to save the day with study of his own. However, the excitement dwindles as each page is filled with research conducted by others. To his credit though, studying serial killers is not an easy task which could explain the lack of solid scientific research. Overall, the book is worth reading for those interested in the academic side of serial killers. The book does provide a solid list of the literature that has been conducted up to the point of publishing, even though it is dated by today’s standards.

An interesting (but dark) book on a dark topic. The research and data are a bit dated. I was doing a bit of research, so I could have used more up-to-date information.

When you hear him being incredibly smart and funny on This American Life, you invariably think, "Oh, it's David Sedaris." But if you listen closely, you can tell the difference. Rakoff, while no less witty or nasal, is a little more disappointed. In his first collection--a series of pieces for public radio and for various magazines--he positively revels in his world-weariness. Whether he's investigating the Loch Ness monster, attending a comedy festival in Aspen, Colorado, visiting a New Age retreat hosted by Steven Seagal, or just, you know, playing Freud in a department-store window at Christmastime, Rakoff tends to get comically depleted. Watching the comic Dan Castellaneta, for example, he writes, "It's a bad sign when I start counting the unused props on stage. Only two wigs, one stool, an easel, and a dropcloth to go. I begin to pray to an unfeeling God to please make Castellaneta multitask." From Library Journal Though replete with wit (Rakoff clearly prefers to provoke a smirk rather than a belly laugh), this book should not be relegated to the humor shelves. And despite the frequent use of first person, indeed the starring role the author often grants himself, most readers won't think of this as autobiography, much less memoir. Journalist, actor, and radio commentator Rakoff has gathered in his first book what can best be described as essays on contemporary culture. The only real theme is his attitude self-deprecating when not self-doubting but no more enchanted with the rest of humanity and the contrivance of his position as irreconcilable outsider. By his own estimate, Rakoff is too thin, gay, Jewish, Canadian, and devoutly urban, while these essays find him climbing a New Hampshire mountain on Christmas day, reporting on the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, playing a modeling agent on a daytime soap, tagging along with Austrians invited to teach in the New York City public school system, and so forth. These situations, however, are mere excuses to expose small parts of the world in which we live. Rakoff's real talent, and there is plenty of it on display here, resides in his powers of social and personal analysis in the guise of description. Highly recommended for general collections. I bought the kindle version of this book. I would definitely recommend the hardcover version. The first few chapters weren't that helpful but I found that as the book progressed it became more useful. It was a good resource for charting purposes (ie here are 10 abnormalities for this system and their general description). The pictures (and there were a lot of them) usually helped illustrate the abnormality. There were times that I felt the book went way to in-depth on certain aspects and other times where I felt it glossed over certain concepts or procedures that I wish it would have covered. All in all, I would give it 4/5 stars. Maybe not worth the $30 I paid for it, but if you could find a used copy for 10-20 it's worth the extra help.

A paramedic partner of mine recommended this series of books to me (he had the pathophysiology one), and after seeing his I immediately bought them all. I'm an EMT and don't actually have to know anything in this book, but I plan on medical school, so I read everything that'll give me a head start.The information is this book is presented with such incredible simplicity it puts every other textbook I've ever come across to shame. Providing visuals helps a lot, especially since some of them are utterly ridiculous and hilarious at 4AM on an ambulance. I learned more from this book than a lot of paramedics know about cardiology. I strongly recommend this one and all the others in the series to anyone at any level of healthcare.

Book is easy enough to follow - not as in depth as I would like it to have been and the "visual-ness" of it isn't too great either - sometimes there are just silly cartoons on the pages that don't have too much to do with the actual content. I bought this book as I'm starting out on a cardiac floor (RN) and for me it's just a basic overview with just OK visual aids.

Item arrived as described. Really enjoy reading this book. Very helpful in understanding the cardiovascular system. This book has awesome illustrations.

Easy to read and retain the information.

I have about books 10 from this series. I bought this one just to brush up on general cardiology knowledge when moving from the ICU to the Cardiac Cath Lab and it was quite helpful. I wouldn't have gotten through school without them. They are great for getting a solid overall view of a subject. Great for students.
