The current 5 level of Pimsleur (I'm at lesson 14 as this is written) is the culmination of the first four levels and combines much of the previously learned materials in such a way as to stretch the abilities of the student. It expects that by level 5 the student should be able to make educated guesses about certain expressions and vocabulary and to employ them correctly. It also uses a lot of the material previously covered while seamlessly introducing more advanced subjects.It employs many more verb tenses, both simple and compound, along with the indicative, subjunctive, and potential moods. More complicated expressions are introduced such as reflexive verb constructions (actually introduced in earlier levels but emphasized here).For example, one of the constructions used was almost exactly the same as a headline from a news story in RTVE Noticias: "Si Cuba fuera un género serÃa tragicomedia." This was just the GREATEST value for me; I am thrilled with this product. I have bought four separate types of Spanish programs, but this Pimsleur is the most usable for me. I study my Spanish in the car, so since I drive every day, I study my Spanish every day. Right there, it has a big advantage over programs I planned on using but never did. (I don't do a full lesson each day, and I stop it often, but I've still made great progress..) My husband likes an app on his phone, but again, life happened and he stopped, but since I drive every single day, I am now on Spanish 5, and am actually understanding and speaking more and more Spanish! I DID use another audio program, but it was nowhere near as good as Pimsleur, because the material wasn't organized as sequentially, and didn't review as thoroughly, so finally I got so frustrated. Plus, the other program had a vocabulary lesson that was just a long string of words, ugh. And to loud music no less, so it was incredibly aggravating. Pimsleur is SO well organized, and you go over it and over it until the responses become natural. You aren't thinking of all the rules and endings of verbs, etc.; you just answer, like you learned language in the first place. And it is fun for me to feel successful; they get you talking fast. And this seller was amazingly prompt and nice!
I love the Pimsleur language programs. They're not like flash cards -- the point isn't to add a huge amount of vocabulary, although you learn plenty of new words. The point is to actually speak the language out loud, which helps you learn to pronounce the words correctly and get a feel for the syntax and structure of the language. There is just enough repetition to set the lesson into your memory without its becoming boring, and then things move on to a new situation. Recently learned words and phrases will drop back into the new situations until they are well-learned. These recordings are great for people who are intimidated by grammar. You learn the grammar by just speaking the language along with the native speakers. Then you can plug new vocabulary into the basic structures you have learned. Highly recommended for use with other written sources of learning.
I have just completed Level IV of Pimsleur's Spanish course and can't speak highly enough of this learning method for conversation if you want to sound like a native speaker. It is very effective - just 30 minutes a day and before long, by Level 3, I was able to communicate well enough in Cuba and Spain to elicit questions such as, "Where did you learn your Spanish?" I have used the Pimsleur method for both Italian and Spanish. Both products are fantastic at getting a start at learning a foreign language.
