Elizabeth A. T. Smith is the former Chief Curator and Deputy Director for programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Previously a curator at MOCA Los Angeles, where she organized "Blueprints for Modern Living: History and Legacy of the Case Study Houses," Smith has taught at the University of Southern California and the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. She has curated numerous exhibitions and published widely on various aspects of contemporary art and architecture.

All I wanted was a book with photos and diagrams of the Case Study Houses. This book fit the bill. And I only paid $15 instead of $150 for some book with lots of long dissertations on the houses. This one is a good buy. Highly recommended.
I am a big fan of Pierre Koenig's style and his ability to create a beautiful design. I was interested in learning more about the case study program, and this book seemed like a bargain. It has sketches and drawings about each of the case study homes, even the ones that were never built. Also makes a nice coffee table book. I will be buying more of the Taschen books on architecture, art and design.
This book is the next best thing to standing inside any of the Case Study Houses. I must admit, I use this book not only for reference, but to show off to anyone who comes to my house. This book tells my visitors that I love modernism, and that the Case Study Houses of California are some of my favorite houses in the world. If you feel the same, then you should also buy this book. If you just want to learn a little about the Case Study Houses, then Case Study Houses: 1945-1966: The California Impetus (Taschen Basic Architecture) is a great concise book. I received that one as a gift. At first I thought I wouldn't need it because I already have the jumbo book, but if I need to find out a quick piece of information I can usually go to the smaller book and find it more quickly. In conclusion, this is one of the top three most important books on architecture that I own.
I ordered this book and then had to wait eight months for it to arrive from Amazon as it was back-ordered. It was well worth the wait as it's one of the definitive books on modern architecture. I saw this book while visiting a design center in Palm Springs several years ago and just had to have it. All of the "masters" are in the book and a number of the original floor plans and details are shown. Also, a significant number of photos were taken by legendary photographer Julius Shulman. If you want to display this book on your coffee table, make sure it's strong enough to support it, as this book is huge.For anyone remotely interested in mid-century architecture or everyone who wishes to experience what life was like over fifty years ago, this book is for you. You won't be disappointed in this fabulous book. Grab a cup of coffee (or tea), a comfy chair, and prepare to spend the better part of an afternoon reading a few of the Case Study Houses showcased in this worthy book.
What an incredible book! If you love architecture and mid-century design, this book is a must have. Tremendous amounts of info of all of the Case Study Homes - detailed descriptions of each of the homes including the concepts behind the design as well as of the builds themselves (if they were built), pictures, plans, images of the architectural scale models. Awesome book!
This is a large, heavy book. It needs space when viewing and it's not the type of book that one sits with and casually turns page after page. The detailed architectural drawings are small, and to do them justice, the reader needs to pause and study the images - much as if looking at a detailed city map.I find myself, returning to specific houses instead of attempting to read or look at it as a typical coffee table book. In this manner, the book becomes even more fascinating - it's wonderful reference material to a different time and place.
The Case Study Houses -- The Complete CSH Program 1945 - 1966 by Taschen is a wonderful, comprehensive study of some of the best of the archetectural projects created from this time period. The principal photography by Julius Shulman is breathtaking and some of the original, vintage photos are presented on two pages within the huge book. When open, this jumbo edition is almost a yard across and at 34" is nearly overwhelming...and by some, too large to handle.The text is well written, informative and easy to comprehend. It describes, in detail, the development of these ultra modern homes located in the Los Angeles area of California which mostly use metal, concrete and glass. All of the materials were derived from various industrial usages and were considered new in the home building area, and innovative to say the least.Combined with the text and the extraordinary photographs, this book is destined to become a collector's item in the future and well worth the investment.
I considered purchasing the original issue of this book, but was turned-off by the high price. I am glad that I waited for this edition. While it is not as large of a format as the original, it is still a big, impressive coffee table type book. For the most part, this book is a compilation of all of the old Arts and Architecture articles for the Case Study Houses, with little new editorial material. It is nice, however, to have them all compiled all in one book, rather than having to hunt through the back issues of the magazine.
